By: Jonathan Bellemore
In the early 1900s, most of the buildings that currently sit in La Pine, were actually in a place called Rosland. Many of them were moved to La Pine's current site in order to be closer to the highway.
"This house was built by William Foss when he first came to the area in 1910 and built it up on Paulina prairie where he had his homestead," says Leon Shield.
In the 20s, the house was moved. William Foss played a big part in La Pine, buying and building many structures. He even provided power from a generator to the public.
"My grandparents they even hooked up to his power in the 40s so which they then had power up until Mid-State came in and then switched to them," Shield says.
In 1935 Leon Shield's grandparents bought Foss' place while working for Shevlin Hixon lumber as the business spread into La Pine.
"It's a shame that this place is not being kept up. It's one of the oldest buildings in La Pine. It's 99 years old."
Foss also bought the Bogue Store which burnt down in 1924, re-built and moved closer to the highway which is the site of the present La Pine Highway Center.
