New Area for Rescued Large Animals

07/08/09 Bend

Deschutes County is moving forward with a new temporary shelter for rescued livestock on Rickard Road near the Knott Landfill.  Currently, the county uses the Redmond Humane Society to care for large animals seized.  The Sheriff's office says it's worried with the economy the way it is, it'll see more cases of animal neglect soon.

We need "to try to develop something where we can be better prepared for livestock care, if we have seizures," says Lt. Gary Decker with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office has already repaired four corrals and cleaned up the property.  Deschutes County Commissioners, the Sheriff's Office and the Central Oregon Humane Society have committed sixteen-thousand dollars to the project.
