Gym Car Break Ins

October 23, 2009

It's a routine for Kathy Bauch, every morning she goes to Aspire Health and Fitness in Bend.
She hides her purse on the floor, before locking her car and going in to work out.
Friday morning a large warning sign catches Kathie off guard. Four car burglaries, windows smashed,in the Aspire parking lot.
Aspire managment is now considering surveillance cameras.

"I'm not sure why they are picking gyms other than maybe they realize that a lot of people do leave their valuables in their car same as if you go to the park and run or if you go to Shevlin Park," said Bauch

Across town at Elite Fitness there were three more victims.

And the same story along the Deschutes River Trail. A woman walking there had her purse stolen after her back window was smashed, her purse covered with a blanket. The burglar later tried to use her debit card.
She was left will a $400 bill to repair her window.

JoAnn Scott leaves her purse in the back of her car whenever she's using the trail with her puppy Zeta.

"Woman have a thing they like to have all their stuff with them. ("just not on the walk?") Just not on the walk, we like to have it in the car with us," said Scott.
Scott says she walks in public places every day but will now be more cautious.
As for Bauch she says she doesn't want to be the next target.
"I'll change my habits, for sure, absolutely," said Bauch.
