11/1/09 Bend & Redmond
Bend and Redmond Police say, even though it fell on a Saturday night, Halloween was unusually quiet for them. Bend Police say the most alarming call they got was two brothers attacked for their Halloween candy. It happened Saturday night on South Queens and Grante Drive in southwest Bend. Police say an unknown teenager took an 8 year-old's candy bag. When the boy's 11 year-old brother tried to get it back, the teenager punched him causing the boy to black out. A 13 year-old girl was also hit during the incident. The suspect is described as a white male, between the ages of 13 and 14, with short brown hair. At the time he was wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweat shirt. Other than that, the Bend Police Department says the downtown area was where most of the problems were.
"Downtown was busy, there were a lot of people downtown and associated things that go along with that, there were a few fights and disturbances but nothing major; it's a little unusual that it was not busier than it was," says Sgt. Greg Owens with the Bend Police Department.
Redmond Police also say, besides a few minors in possession of alcohol, Halloween was unusually quiet for them as well. Redmond Police say they had one DUII arrest, while the Bend Police Department arrested four for driving under the influence.
Oregon State Police troopers say they've double the number of DUII arrests this Halloween compared with last year. Between 6 pm October 31st and 6 am November 1st, OSP arrested 31 people for driving under the influence statewide. During that same time last year, troopers made just 15 arrests. The Springfield office had 10 DUII arrests, the most of any other area. The Portland office made 6 DUII arrests, while at the Bend office there was just one. OSP says the holiday is an especially problematic night for drunk drivers, but fortunately this year it reported no fatal traffic crashes Halloween night.

Whats wrong (or maybe right) with Prineville and Crook County
I'm just a little curious about something. If this piece and the piece on KTVZ are correct then no one in Prineville and Crook County got drunk and drove. I am amazed by this. I have been a Crook County resident for 26 years and I know that drinking happens here. So, one of two things happened last night: 1. Every person that drank at one of the many parties or at the bars had a designated driver or walked. I would love it if 1. was true! 2. The Prineville Police and the Crook County S.O. did not have officers/deputies on the road looking for DUI's. If 2 is true then maybe we need to be asking why that is. I remember a time when Prineville had quite a reputation as it related to DUI's and it was important to them. Have times changed that much? Maybe so I guess. I offer a "job well done" to the OSP, Deschutes County S.O. and Bend and Redmond PDs. Thanks Guys!
