What is the definition of a marriage is a question almost every state in the nation has asked it's voters. Basic Rights Oregon announced Monday it wants the question to again appear on Oregon's ballot in 2012. Right now, the group is getting the conversation around legalizing same sex marriage in Oregon going.
"We have a lot of time right now just to begin having the conversations before things get muddled in an election, before tempers start to flare, just people talking to people," says Jenni Peskin with the Human Dignity Collation in Bend, a partner of Basic Rights Oregon.
Oregon voter's amended the state constitution in 2004 defining marriage as between one man and one woman. That passed with a fifty-seven percent majority. The Oregon Family Council plans to keep the constitution the way it is. Betsy Maynard, spokes person for the group, would not agree to an interview, but released a statement saying:
"We're certain a majority of Oregonians still believe oregon's current marriage definition is best for our state."
Oregon currently does allow same sex civil unions. But gay rights activists say it's not the same.
"Domestic partnerships in Oregon offer about five hundred protections rights and privileges, marriage is close to something like 2,000," Peskin says.
Along with hospital visitation rights, family insurance plans can also be different.
"If a same sex couple can't get married, they're insurance benefits may not be extended to their family and their children," says Peskin.
Maynard says the oregon family council will continue to fight the ballot effort, stating:
"They can be certain that we will once again provide Oregonians with arguments for preserving traditional marriage in Oregon."

Marriage
Definition is simple....a union between a man and a woman, and for the moral people, witnessed under God. Oregon will be making a huge mistake...don't do it. Keep Oregon moral. We give that up and we might as well erase the line between us and California.
Morality
Are you kidding me? Do you know the definition of Moral? It has nothing to do with religion or God. It has to do with right or wrong. And there is nothing "wrong" with gay marriage. You're entitled to your opinion, of course....but love is love.... It IS however "wrong" to pass judgement on your fellow human beings!
How can we not respect a human being's love for another?
My God tells me to love and respect others, and I believe that extends to letting a loving couple marry if they so choose. Just because one person's religion doesn't "recognize" marriage, doesn't mean that another's shouldn't allow them to be married. Isn't that what "freedom from religion" is all about?
WIth somewhere around 50% of straight couples getting divorced, who are they to say who can be married and who cannot? Allowing domestic partnerships is only a legal status. What if that couple believes in marriage for religious reasons? Should they not be allowed to get married in their church? This "protection" of marriage argument has so many holes in it that it's simply broken.
I think many Oregonians voted for the adoption of the one-man/one-woman definition because they hadn't had time to fully consider what it meant. I hope this time around, the majority of us will do the right thing, and allow same-sex couples to have the marriage of their dreams, in their church.
Justified or not, it's still perversion...
Voting Doesn't Change Any of the Below Statements.
Science or Religion says;
Man having sex with an Animal = Perverted Sex
Man having sex with Porno = Perverted Sex
Man having sex with Children = Perverted Sex
Man having sex with Self = Perverted Sex
Man having sex with Man = Perverted Sex
Man having sex with Woman = Procreation
If gay sex is so right, why do all the queers have to rationalize their sexual behavior. They spend so much time and energy trying to convince themselves and the world that they are normal, when they are really just perverted beings...
~ Put all the gays on an island and come back in a hundred years. What will be left? Just an island! Put a Man and a woman on an island and come back in a hundred years. What will be let? An island, full of people... ~ Go figure.~
Slim
Fantacy Island
The question has been asked what would happen to an island if left to the gays for 100 years as opposed to the ONE hetero couple. I don't know what would be "let" but I can only imagine the inbreeding that would take place to populate said island starting with one hetero-sexual couple.. isn't incest "perverted sex?"
However, give an island to the gays (add a turkey baster) and you would have one fabulous island. Imagine with me if you will perfectly manicured gardens, tastefully decorated homes, a society that honors human rights, and blow your mind dance clubs.
To use the bible, or any religion to disqualify ANY member of society, is simply discrimination. Remember when the bible said that slavery was ok? Remember when the bible said it was ok to have many wives? Remember when the bible said that women should just keep quiet and were the property of their husband? Remember?
Do you also remember the part of our Constitution that says ALL are created EQUAL? That there is to be a SEPARATION of church and state. I am pleased for all of those that have their "religion" (which the bible says is to care for widows and orphans) But separation of church and state was to protect citizens from having to follow government imposed religious practices. Therefore, denying marriage to a group of people based on what a group of people claims the bible says is unconstitutional.
It's about equality! Not religion.
Like I said...
You validated my statement very well! "If gay sex is so right, why do all the queers have to rationalize their sexual behavior. They spend so much time and energy trying to convince themselves and the world that they are normal, when they are really just perverted beings..." by the way, I'm not religious. If incest is the only way to repopulate, how can you call it perverted. Procreation is part of the natural world, a man doing a man is twisted no matter how much you rationalize the behavior. Why don't all you gays go live on an island and become endangered beings? Aids is your gift to mankind, makes ya feel proud, don't it...
