EUGENE, Ore--Firefighters received a call before 3 this morning, that smoke was coming from Jasper's Deli on West 11th and Bailey Hill Road. Fire crews realized that when they arrived the fire was actually from coming inside, Zany Zoo Pets, right next door to the deli.
Fire officials said the fire was burning in an interior wall, that reached into the attic. Crews were able to get inside and put the blaze out quickly.
But not before it caused significant smoke damage to both, the Jasper's Deli and Zany Zoo Pets.
"We've taken a large number of variety of animals out of the pet store, that were still alive. Despite the heavy smoke that was in the building. Those animals are being transported to a 24-hour emergency vet clinic, just about two blocks away," said Eugene Fire District Chief Mark Grover.
Those animals ranged from reptiles to birds---hamsters, gerbils and rabbits.
Animal Urgent Care Officials said they're caring for just over 60 animals. Some of the animals suffered from smoke inhalation and didn't survive. Those that did, are in stable condition--some birds are being treated with oxygen.
Fire officials still investigating the cause.
