Parents at the Powell Butte Elementary school are moving forward with plans to try and change it into a charter school. Monday night they submitted their proposal to the Crook County School board. If approved the school would get about eighty percent of its current funding directly from the state. The other twenty percent would go back to the district. The school would rent the building, transportation and food services and could add the sixth grade.
"I think it's an opportunity to give our students in Powell Butte and in Crook County, the ones who are going to go, a great quality education," says Crook County school board member Lynn Lundquist.
"My goal is to make sure that it's the best thing for all of our student through out the district," says Patty Norris, Crook County school board member.
The Crook County school board is now reviewing the proposal. If it passes, the district would oversee the charter school's academic standing and report back to the state.
