Kendama Craze Hits Bend

04/24/2010 Bend

It's the newest craze sweeping Bend among youths of all ages. This toy is called the Kendama, coming to the US from Japan. It's a wooden ball attached to a hammer looking stick. On Saturday Wabi Sabi hosted the first tournament in Bend and perhaps the state. The money from the $5 entry fee will go to providing kendamas to homeless children. About 30 kids of all ages and skill level competed, making this toy look deceivingly easy. "The first day you get it, it's pretty hard even to just get the cup, like just playing with it for a few days for a couple hours you get the hang of it and once you master a trick it's in your head," says Advanced Competitor Tim Durtschi.

"Once you pick it up it becomes pretty addicting," says fellow competitor Damian Garcia.

They say it's near impossible to master as new and harder tricks keep being invented.
