Storm Could Bring Business Back to Ski Resorts

By Jessica Debbas

HOODOO SKI AREA, Ore. -- Local ski resorts are counting on this weekend's storm to give their season a lift.

The forecast shows storms this week could turn several inches of snow into several feet, starting Saturday.

Many ski resort managers say this is the kind of weather they've been waiting for to bring the business in.

There aren't any lines for ski lifts at Hoodoo, one of the only resorts open right now.

That's because the snow base isn't very deep.

Managers say the resort needs more snow to open all its chair lifts, especially with the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend, a popular time for skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes.

"This year our average storm has been about an inch. We're really hoping for six inches of snow. If we do get six inches of snow, we will be able to open Green Lift at the top of the mountain and have about 90 percent of the terrain open," said Hoodoo Ski Area General Manager Matthew McFarland.

Since the area isn't in full operation with only three of the five lifts open, managers cut down ticket prices. It's only $30 to ski for the day.

With snow in the forecast, Willamette Pass Ski Area is scheduled to be open this weekend too.

Although right now managers plan to only open a beginner hill and advanced slopes.
