Semi Trucks Jackknife Due to Icy Roads

By Kate Renner

LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- In these slick conditions, big rigs are sliding off the road, jackknifing and blocking traffic on major highways in our region.

Monday morning, a truck jackknifed on I-5 near Cottage Grove and caused crews to shut down one lane.

Sunday night, a similar incident happened with a semi on Highway 58 near Pleasant Hill, and another truck did it on I-5 near the Glenwood exit Sunday morning.

According to semi drivers, a lot of the reasons their trucks will jackknife is because other drivers cut them off, causing them to slam on the brakes and as one driver put it, "it's really hard to stop 80,000 pounds on a dime when a car gets in front of you."

For big rigs that have to make a delivery, drivers say if you start to jackknife, speed up and don't slam on your brakes.

"You want to step on the gas so you can catch up with yourself because the trailer is going to start to swerve. Instead of braking, when you brake, the trailer's going to go more. And when you step on the gas you kind of want to straighten out," said one truck driver.

Semis are more prone to jackknife if they have a light or empty load.

The best piece of advice for semi drivers: if your company allows you to stay off the roads during inclement weather, don't drive on nights with weather like we will see Monday night.
