Biking on Highway Shoulders Legal in Oregon

By Kate Renner

EUGENE, Ore. -- A bicyclist was killed Saturday night while riding his bike on I-5 near Cottage Grove.

Casey Michael Pitts-Carroll was not wearing any reflective clothing and had no lights on his bike when he was hit crossing the interstate at the Saginaw exit, police say.

According to Oregon State Police, it is perfectly legal for bicyclists to bike on state highways like I-5, and though standard bike laws do apply, state troopers encourage extra precaution.

"No laws considering clothing. However, it would be safe if you're traveling at night on a bike to wear reflective clothing or clothing with bright colors," said Oregon State Police Trooper Andy Youngblood.

As far as biking on a state highway, bicyclists are required to be on the outside shoulder as far away from traffic as possible.

They must ride in the same direction as traffic.

I totally support people who practice sports and I respect their healthy life style and their passion they are doing it with. However, I can`t make up my mind who bears more guilt in this case: the man becoming a victim or the ones who made this law, without drawing attention on some particular cases related to it that might occur, like this case, for example. I am a sportsman as well, I play fantasy hockey and I like it very much. Even so, I don`t go on a frozen lake by night time to do this. Get my point?
