32-year old Jason E. Mayer is now behind bars at the Deschutes County Jail. Mayer is accused of stealing rougly $24,000 in cash and some tools from at least five businesses in the Redmond area. Neighbors say he lived in a corner house on Southwest 12th Street in Redmond but neighbors there disagree on his character.
"There was always strange things going on over there. Lots of people coming and going. The police would come by every now and then. I saw him get hauled off once in his boxer shorts," said Mark Hentze, a neighbor.
"He was always nice to me and if I needed some help, but I didn't figure on him breaking into places," another neighbor said.
The burglaries were destructive--causing around $8,000 in damage. Mayer allegedly yanked out an ATM from the Abby's Legendary Pizza in Redmond and cut through the roof of the Redmond VFW. He's also connected with burglaries at Cement Products Manufacturing, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Hooker Creek Rental.
"He's basically a pretty good guy," Linda said.
But some evidence shows otherwise. In March, detectives got a warrant to search Mayer's house. Inside, they found methamphetamine, various tools, incluindg a crow bar, saws, seldge hammer, and a large amount of $20 bills.
"At two or three in the morning, he'd be banging out there, doing who knows what," Hentze said.
Redmond detectives say the case is still under investigation, bu they have recovered a portion of the stolen cash and property. Mayer is charged with one count of burglary, four counts of theft, and one count of criminal mischief.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Redmond Police Department.
