Your Voice: Heroes

06/03/09 Bend

The Red Cross honored some local heroes Wednesday. Good news can be in short supply, but The American Red Cross has assembled it's annual list of Heroes and believes their stories should be told.

According to Candi Fronk, who Chairs the American Red Cross Board, the stories include Allison Perry of Bend, who specializes in working with veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder;15-year-old Anna Stone of La Pine, who used her Red Cross First Aid training to save the life of the Young Continentals singing group; and Barry Maroni of Redmond who served as Volunteer Campaign Chair for the United Way of Deschutes County in the toughest economic period many of us remember.

Other heroes include PFC Cody Eggleston of Redmond who was killed in Iraq by a mortar attack that also took the life of Pfc. Heath K. Pickard of Texas. Eggleston was 21 years old and Dick Tobiason of Bend, who works tirelessly to see that the sacrifices of service people like Cody Eggleston are not forgotten.

There are other stories to share, too: Like Dave Lewis of Sunriver who actually applied his CPR knowledge to save the life of his dog, Bailey; or Janet Hernandez of Prineville, whose dramatic story includes rushing into a burning mobile home to pull a disabled resident to safety.

Whom do you consider a hero?
