In this ‘You Ask, We Answer,' Lisa in Bend asks "Does the state ever intend to implement automobile smog checks for Central Oregon?  It would be more jobs, money for our state, and be great for the environment."
 
Portland and Medford are the only two cities in Oregon to do smog checks for vehicles.  Medford started the program in 1985 after racking up thirty-five smog violations.  The Department of Environmental Quality has just started checking ozone levels in Bend.  So far it hasn't found any
 
"Carbon monoxide levels in Central Oregon have always been very low and we don't foresee them increasing anytime in the near future enough to require a vehicle inspection program," says Bonnie Hough with DEQ.
