Plane Crashes Near Sunriver Airport

7/3/2009 - Sunriver

A single engine Piper Arrow airplane crash landed a quarter mile north of the Sunriver Airport, around River and Deschutes Roads, at 4:15 Friday afternoon. It apparently lost power after takeoff, going down in a grassy field. Three men were in the plane, thankfully they were not seriously hurt. In part, because of the efforts of the pilot, getting the plane safely to the ground.

"He just knew he was making a landing and lower altitude its really not safe to make it back to the airport so he choice to land in the field and he did a beautiful job," said Stephanie Hartung, the Sunriver Airport Manager.

It's still not clear why the plane lost power. Emergency officials say there were no fuel leaks. The crew was traveling from Washington to California.
