In this, ‘You ask; We answer,' Richard asks, "Why is it that there is a school zone in front of Mountain View High School on NE 27th Street in Bend, in front of Trinity Lutheran on NE Butler Market Road, but not a school zone in front of St. Francis Catholic School on NE 27th Street?"
St. Francis says it has brought up the issue with the City of Bend in the past. A survey was done years ago which found that not many kids walk to the school. Those who walk can use the school zone crosswalk nearby at Mountain View high school, which is a zone for both schools.
"School zones are placed and located based on where the kids are crossing or where the kids are biking to school. We don't put in a school zones just for parent drop off. We'll put one in for the kids as they walk and bike," says Robin Lewis, City of Bend Transportation Engineer.
When school starts back up, Bend police will have extra patrols in school zones to watch for speeders.
