Local Students Work on Solar Car

11/28/2009 - Bend

A local group of high school students working to build a solar car get some inspiration this weekend. The team of teenagers at the Trinity Lutheran School in Bend competed last year with their first ever solar car. This year, their working to break their top speed of around thirty five miles an hour. They got some help from a team with a little more experience. The Oregon State University solar car team brought their own car to Bend, part of a joint effort to raise money for the project.

"The biggest benefit of making solar cars right now is that we take young people and we teach them about electric drive systems, making vehicles efficient," said Kathy Han from the Oregon State University team.

"I love there car and I hope one day we will be competing against them, even beating them, whatever works," said Andrea Anaya, the team captain for the Trinity Lutheran team.

The local team of high schoolers hope to have their new car up and running in January.
