In this 'You Ask; We Answer' Linda in Bend says, "Enclosed is a picture of some of the mole holes in my grass. I cannot seem to get rid of them...ever. How do you get rid of moles when all else fails?"
KOHD News did some digging and it turns out those mole holes are really caused by pocket gophers. Ryan with Bend Pest Control says in the Bend area we have voles (a type of meadow mouse) and pocket gophers. Moles are sparse.
Twice a year, during spring and fall, pocket gophers feed and mate heavily. The rest of the year they are pretty dormant/inactive.
For a permanent solution, you can dig an underground trench 2-3' below ground and lay a stainless steel cloth that doesn't allow the gophers to dig into the yard. It is very costly, especially for a large yard but a footlong trench doesn't allow the gophers to dig in.
If they are already in the property the most effective way to get rid of them is to poison them.
