Olympic Track and Field Trial Tickets Released

By Lauren Mickler

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Olympic Track and Field Trials are just around the corner, and tickets for the events are now on the way to their owners.

If you're one of the lucky ones that already has your hands on some tickets, organizers say you should be seeing those in the mail this week.

When you open that envelope, you'll see eight iconic gold medalists, each on the ticket for the event they specialized in.

They include Oregon native Dick Fosbury, who's on the ticket for day four when the high jump competition will take place.

"We wanted to honor the history of track and field, so we chose gold medal winners who represent the sports that have finals on each of the days that correspond with that ticket," said TrackTown12 organizing committee member Marilyn Milne.

As of Tuesday morning, more than 15,000 single-day tickets had been sold.

We're just five weeks away from the trials. And if you don't have tickets yet, there are still single day tickets left, but organizers say they're going fast.

Chambers Twins Help Duck Softball Host First NCAA Regional

By Erik Elken

EUGENE, Ore. -- Lindsey and Kelsey Chambers have been playing softball on the same team since they were five years old.

"My whole life she's [Kelsey] been right there next to me on the field," elder twin Lindsey said.

"We kind of know what each other's thinking, not telepathically, but we know what each other's thinking like I'll know that she's covering the steal, or if I'm covering the steal, we kind of just look at each other, and we know," Kelsey said.

The identical twins make up the starting left side of the Duck softball team's infield, with Lindsey at third base and Kelsey at shortstop.

For both, being a Duck was a childhood dream as they say they grew up in Duck gear. Their father, Ron, attended the University of Oregon.

They have combined to hit 45 total home runs and 167 RBI in their four year careers leading up to Thursday's NCAA Regional against Portland State.

Their chemsitry helps them on the field, but unlike most siblings, they say they rarely have any big fights.

"We'll get tired of each other for maybe like ten minutes and then after that we're just like, alright let's go do something," Lindsey said.

"The worst fight was in high school when I took her jeans. She got really mad and it took like two hours for us to make up."

Aside from the occasional wardrobe argument, there is one thing they will never agree on - who is better. According to Kelsey's team bio, one of her nicknames is "good twin".

"That was just a joke," Kelsey said. "But I think I'm the good twin because I just am, I don't know."

"No one's ever called her the good twin," Lindsey said. "And if they do they come right back at me and say, 'But you're the better twin'".

One thing they can both vehemently agree on, is their desire to end their long softball careers with a national championship.

"It would mean so much to do it at my dream school, as a senior to end my career, with my sister ... it would be an amazing experience," Lindsey said.

The quest for that storybook ending begins Thursday at 6 p.m. at Howe Field against Portland State.

Altercation Fuels Oregon Sweep of USC

Courtesy: Oregon Sports Information

EUGENE, Ore. – The sixth-ranked Oregon baseball team completed the sweep of USC on Monday night at PK Park with a come-from-behind 6-3 victory.

The Ducks (38-14, 19-8) are currently first in the Pac-12 standings with a one and 1/2 -game lead over Arizona. Oregon, currently on a five-game win streak, will take a weekend off from conference play, hosting Seattle at PK Park beginning Friday, and will then complete the regular season in a three-game series at Oregon State, May 25-27.

Trailing 3-1, Oregon manufactured a three-run inning in the sixth to take its first lead of the game before adding two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

For the fourth straight game Oregon’s lead was handed over to closer Jimmie Sherfy, and the right-hander picked up his 16th save of the season after entering the game in the eighth with runners on the corners and just one out as the Ducks led 4-3. A strikeout and fly out ended the top of the eighth, and after the Ducks put up two runs in the bottom of the inning, Sherfy struck out the side in the ninth.

Oregon right-hander Jeff Gold improved to 7-3 for the Ducks, holding USC (22-24, 7-16) to three runs – just one earned – on five hits and two walks while matching a career high with six strikeouts.

USC starter Stephen Tarpley (5-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and five walks in five and 1/3 innings on the mound.

As Oregon trailed by two runs, a three-run sixth inning allowed the Ducks to take their first lead of the contest, 4-3, as a trio of Oregon batters each drove in a run. WithThomas Walker at third and Brett Hambright at second after a walk and double, Andrew Mendenhall drove in a run with a single to left. A J.J. Altobelli sacrifice fly evened the score, and Aaron Jones’ bunt single brought in Mendenhall from third as UO took a 4-3 lead.

In the eighth with Martin Viramontes on the hill for USC, the Ducks added insurance runs for Sherfy as Aaron Payne was walked and Jones singled to put runners on the corners for Ryon Healy, who produced a shallow RBI single that dropped into right field. A Brett Thomas sacrifice fly brought in Jones for UO’s final run of the game.

Payne, Jones and Brett Hambright led the Ducks with two hits apiece including Hambright’s fifth double of the season, and Payne’s third triple of the year. Jones continues to lead Oregon with 35 RBIs.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second as an error allowed Andres Rodriguez to score from second.

Oregon evened the game in the bottom of the fourth as Tarpley walked back-to-back batters. Hambright then dropped a bunt single down the third baseline, and Kyle Garlickwas able to score as USC third baseman Kevin Swick committed an error on the overthrow to first base.

But in the fifth, the Trojans responded by taking a 3-1 lead on Matt Foat’s two-run homer to left field.

Foat led USC with a 2-for-3 effort, while Rodriguez also added two hits.

Oregon returns to action at PK Park at 6 pm, Friday to begin a three-game series with Seattle.

Notes: The Ducks swept their fifth series of the season and their third in Pac-12 play…Oregon has won 11 of its last 12 and is on a five-gamw winning streak...Oregon is now 13-10 after the opponent scores first…Jimmie Sherfy has recorded the win or save in Oregon’s last five games, and during that stretch has allowed just two of eight inherited runners to score. He has struck out 15 batters in nine and 2/3 shutout innings, and has allowed just two hits while holding opposing batters to .074 clip.

Troop Aid Group Needs Donations to Continue Operating

By Heather Turner

ALBANY, Ore. -- Even though its shelves are stocked, a local nonprofit group that sends care packages to troops around the world is on the brink of closing and is in desperate need for support.

While the Oregon branch of Give2TheTroops has received many donations of items requested by the troops, the money they need to send those items overseas has been lacking.

Local volunteers receive specialized requests from our men and women in combat zones.

Twice a month, for the past three and a half years, they pack large 50 to 65 pound care packages to send to deployed troops.

The boxes are packed with everything from DVDs and books, to games, snacks, and possibly the most important, letters.

Volunteers ship about 25 to 30 boxes a month.

While their shelves are still packed with goods, they're almost out of money and only have enough to continue operating for two more months.

"And that's really hard when I start looking at folders and saying how am I going to fill these requests? Who do I say no to if we don't get the funds in that we need to ship these boxes off?" said Give2TheTroops Oregon/Washington Branch Director Sharon Crary.

Give2TheTroops is looking to raise about $50,000 to support the entire organization.

The Oregon branch currently has 45 requests that would serve more than 1,500 soldiers, but not enough money to ship them out.

To find out how you can donate money to help the cause, click here.

TSA Relaxes Rules for Senior Citizens

By Jessica Debbas

EUGENE, Ore. -- Senior citizens 75 or older will now get through security lines at the Eugene Airport with less hassle, thanks to new rules from the Transportation Safety Administration.

The new rules took effect Monday, May 14.

They keep seniors from tussling with clothes and shoes while standing in line.

Seniors will now be allowed to leave their shoes and light sweaters and jackets on when going through security lines.

The goal is to allow officers to better focus their efforts on those who are more likely to pose a security risk.

But some travelers question the fairness of the new rules.

The pilot program debuted at Portland International Airport in mid-March.

Three other international airports in the US rolled out the new rules at the same time.

Now four other Oregon airports will use the new guidelines.

Streaks Continue: Duck Men Win 6th, Women 4th, Title In A Row

***Video Taken Down Due To Pac-12 Rules***

Courtesy: UO Sports Information

EUGENE, Ore. - The Women of Oregon swept both the 200 meters and the 800 meters to easily win their fourth straight conference crown Sunday before 7,144 fans at Historic Hayward Field. The men used wins in the 800 meters and 110 hurdles and an impressive opener by the 4x100 meter relay to keep the remainder of the field at bay and win their sixth consecutive league title.

"We are a part of a great conference," said Oregon Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. "I'm very proud of these kids, our staff, and even though it is great to host, it is tough to host too. Still, to win the final Pac-10 Championship (in 2011), and first Pac-12 Championship is great."

On a warm and sunny day at Historic Hayward Field, the men became just the second school in league history to win six conference titles in a row, and the first to do it in nearly 50 years. USC was the last team to accomplish that, winning eight in a row from 1957-64. For the women, Oregon became just the second school to win four titles in a row, joining UCLA, which won eighth straight from 1997-2004.

The women going away with 200.5 points, followed by Stanford with 123.5, Arizona with 94.5, USC with 91 and Arizona State with 85. On the men's side, Oregon kept piling up points across the board to win with 140 points, followed by Arizona State with 116.5, Arizona with 94, UCLA with 86 and Washington and Stanford tied for fifth with 78.

Not only did the women lead wire-to-wire, they slammed the door shut early when Laura Roesler, Becca Friday and Claudia Francis swept the 800 meters. Roseler had just enough over the last 20 meters to win in a seasonal-best 2:05.13 and hold off her teammates. Friday pushed hard for second in a personal-best 2:05.34, while Francis finished in 2:05.42.

"I couldn't have asked for a better race," said Roesler. "Anyone could have taken it. A sweep is a perfect day. (I was thinking) just win the hell out of that last stretch. I felt someone coming from behind, but didn't want to do anything until I crossed the line. I ran in form and heard the crowd and they carried me through the end."

That gave Oregon an insurmountable 52-point lead that only grew from there when the Ducks added an impressive 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 meters. Sophomore sensation English Gardner jumped out of the blocks and easily outdistanced the field to win in 22.82. Phyllis Francis followed her in 23.03 and Lauryn Newson was third in 23.09. Those were the second, third and fourth fastest times in school history.

Newson may have produced Oregon's overall effort the best of anyone in the meet. Minutes before her third-place finish in the 200, she won the triple jump by an inch, going a personal-best 43-4.25/13.21m. That was the second-longest triple jump in school history. The senior from Richmond, Calif., was also the runner-up in the 100 meters in 11.38 and took the third leg on Oregon's winning 4x100 meter relay team. For her 26.5 total points, Newson was named Pac-12 Athlete of the Meet.

"It was a busy day, but it paid off; not really tired anymore, probably from all the adrenaline," said Newson. "I have been waiting for this moment for a long time and I'm finally getting into the swing of things with a lot of really good practice.

"What makes today different is I did really well in every event. Today feels even better and it's my last time at Hayward Field. We got the spirit today."

Gardner nearly equaled Newson, adding a win in the 100 meters in a windy, all-conditions personal best of 11.00 to win going away. She added the second leg the Ducks' 4x100 relay. That squad, which also featured Phyllis Francis and Amber Purvis won in 43.72, the second-fastest time in school history. Purvis was also eighth in the 100 meters in 11.70.

"I'm not used to the heat in Oregon, but I got it," said Gardner. "I got a great start and I'm just really happy. The lion was finally unleashed."

The seventh-ranked women also counted wins in the 400 meters and 1,500 meters.

Phyllis Francis ran a strong 400 to win in a personal-best 52.02, No. 3 on the Oregon list. Chizoba Okodogbe and Devin Gosberry also scored in the 400, with Okodogbe placing fourth in 53.44 and Gosberry eighth in a personal-best 53.96.

"I wasn't expecting it today, especially to PR," said Francis. "My main goal was to PR and then get as many points for my team."

Jordan Hasay captured a thrilling 1,500 meters that saw the lead go back and forth between three runners - Hasay, Katie Flood of Washington and Jessica Tebo of Colorado. Flood made her move early, but could not shake the other two runners. Tebo then made a break late, but Hasay covered and kept a charging Flood at bay to defend her 1,500 title in 4:13.28. Oregon also added a fourth-place finish from Anne Kesselring (4:17.20) and a fifth-place finish from Friday (4:19.82) for 19 points in that race.

The women also saw a surprising performance from Laura Bobek in the discus. The sophomore from Astoria, Ore., placed fourth with a personal-best throw of 170-6/51.96m that tied her for seventh on the UO career list.

In the pole vault, Kortney Ross tied for fourth with a clearance at 13-4.5, while Sammie Clark was seventh at 13-0.75.

Some freshmen also got in the scoring column Sunday. Chancey Summers and Lauren Crockett tied for fourth in the high jump at 5-8.5/1.74m, while Allie Woodward was sixth-place in the 5,000 meters in a personal-best 16:24.10.

The women wrapped up the scoring with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay in 3:32.59. The team of Gosberry, Okodogbe, Phyllis Francis and Roesler ran the fifth-fastest time in school history.

"The women really dominated," said Lananna. "I didn't imagine we would score 200 points, even in my wildest dreams. I hadn't anticipated that at all; I thought we would get around 170."

Getting a huge boost from the Ducks' championship football team once again, the men set the tone right away on the first running event with a runner-up performance in the 4x100 meter relay. Dior Mathis, Arthur Delaney, Joeal Hotchkins, and De'Anthony Thomas ran 40.09, tied for the seventh-fastest time in school history.

The Ducks were mired in the middle of the pack when Thomas, the football freshman sensation, took the baton and ran down everyone but the Sun Devils.

"I'm just trying to stay healthy and every day I just have to improve," said Thomas. "(Yesterday's race) motivated me to just work harder. I have great chemistry with my teammates and I'm really proud."

A short while later, Elijah Greer won the 800 meters in 1:48.48 by loping around the outside with his long strides to edge by Washington State's Joe Abbott, who was second in 1:48.59. Boru Guyota was fifth in 1:49.36 and freshman Russell Hornsby was sixth in 1:51.63 for the Ducks.

"I had to work to get back in position and fight until the last stretch," said Greer. "I thought I got (Abbott) and then he fought back, but I said there was no way I was going to lose this. I gave everything I had. I was very tired afterwards.

"I had to battle people out. Today I absolutely had to win, but it was a fight and I felt the strain. I definitely heard the crowd, and I thought there is no way I can lose this. For the fans, I wanted to give a show and work hard. You can't always control the outcome, but I'll give everything I can. I want to be in the moment and leave nothing behind."

Oregon was also a winner in the 110 hurdles, where freshman Johnathan Cabral got to the hurdle first and was safely over all 10 barriers in a windy personal-best 13.61. Oregon also got points from Eric Hersey's sixth-place finish in 13.34 and Trevor Ferguson's eight-place time on 14.56.

"I started shaky, but made up for it," said Cabral. "My mind goes blank and my body takes over. That's where practice comes in."

Mike Berry was the runner-up in the 400 meters in 45.85, his fastest time of the year, and also anchored the 4x400 meter relay team to third place. That squad of Bryan Harper, Hornsby, Greer and Berry timed a season-best 3:08.30.

Freshman Arthur Delaney was a key contributor in both the 100 and 200 meters. The Gresham, Ore., native was third in the 100 in 10.24 and fourth in the 200 in 20.73. Both times were the fourth-fastest in school history.

The men, half of whom were competing at the conference meet for the first time in their Oregon careers, scored 14 points in the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Trevor Dunbar led that group with a third-place finish in 3:47.84, with senior Travis Stanford fourth in 3:48.61, freshman Colby Alexander seventh in 3:49.25 and freshman Chad Noelle eighth in 3:49.46.

Oregon also posted 12 points in the 5,000 meters, with Dunbar taking fourth in 14:00.44, Luke Puskedra fifth in 14:01.03 and Parker Stinson seventh in 14:09.17.

The men counted points in the field from senior Brian Schaudt's sixth-place finish in the triple jump (50-9.5/15.48m) and sophomore Tanner Harris' seventh-place finish hammer (188-4/57.41m).

"Everybody thought we were the underdogs coming in, but we knew what we had to do," said Berry. "We wanted to come out here and compete to the best of our ability and bring a sixth championship back here to Oregon."

Ducks Beat USC 4-3 In Series Opener

Courtesy: Oregon Sports Information

EUGENE, Ore. - Jimmie Sherfy struck out the final four batters he faced as No. 9 Oregon opened its series against USC with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at PK Park.

The Ducks (36-14, 17-8), winners in nine of their last 10 games, defeated the Trojans (22-22, 7-14) by pounding out 10 hits despite leaving 13 runners stranded, including eight in Oregon's final three innings at the plate.

Oregon right-hander Alex Keudell (9-3) won his eighth consecutive start, limiting USC to three runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out four.

Aaron Jones, who started in right field for the first time since April 13 at Stanford, gave Oregon a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, driving Ben Mount's 1-0, one-out offering over the wall in left to record his sixth home run the season.

But USC evened the score after Dante Flores' RBI single scored Alex Sherrod, who led off the fourth with a double into right field.

Oregon then scored three runs with two outs on the board to take a 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth as Aaron Payne stole second after being walked, and was in position to score on Ryon Healy's double into right field.

The Ducks recorded back-to-back doubles as Brett Thomas drove his second hit of the game into right field to bring Healy home. Oregon scored its final run of the inning as Kyle Garlick recorded an infield single, and the error by USC shortstop James Roberts on the overthrow to first allowed Thomas to score unearned.

USC starter Ben Mount (1-5) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk tossing a total of five innings.

USC closed 4-3 in the top of the sixth as Matt Foat's two-out, two-run double to left allowed Sherrod and Flores to score after each singled earlier in the inning.

Oregon left the bases loaded in back-to-back innings in the sixth and seventh innings, and stranded two more base runners in the eighth.

But the combination of Tommy Thorpe and Sherfy allowed the Ducks to complete the win.

In the top of the seventh with two outs and a runner on first, Oregon went to its bullpen and Thorpe caught Garrett Stubbs stealing second for the third out. In the top of the eighth, Thorpe had a runner on first and two outs when Horton called Sherfy to the mound. Sherfy plunked a batter before striking out the next four he faced to earn his 14th save of the season.

Sherrod led USC with a 3-for-4 day and two runs scored. Oregon was led by Thomas' 3-for-4 outing, including a RBI, run scored and his 13th double of the season. Healy added two hits including his 11th double of the year for the Ducks.

Notes: The crowd of 2,951 was the second largest of the season and the ninth largest all-time...Oregon is now 14-4 in one-run games... J.J. Altobelli lined out to USC starter Ben Mount in the bottom of the second in his first plate appearance since April 16...the Ducks have recorded 86 two-out RBIs...Alex Keudell earned his eighth straight win on the mound despite recording his shortest outing since March 16, lasting six and 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs - also the most earned runs he has allowed since four at Washington on March 16. Keudell's nine wins in 2012 tie for first in Oregon single-season history, while his 21 career victories rank second...Aaron Jones continues to lead the Ducks with 34 RBIs, and is tied for the team lead with six home runs...Brett Thomas' 13 doubles tie for third in Oregon single-season history.

UO Students to Appear on 'Shark Tank'

By Kelsey Card

EUGENE, Ore. -- Two University of Oregon students say they're getting more fame than they ever expected after coming up with Wild Squirrel Nut Butter.

The impromptu decision to make their own special peanut butter snowballed into a huge business for Keeley Tillotson and Erika Welsh.

They've been featured twice in Oprah Winfrey's O, The Oprah Magazine.

And on Friday, they'll be on ABC's show Shark Tank.

"For us, it legitimizes the company. At the time we were so small, but we were still chosen to be a part of the show when there were hundreds of applicants that applied, thousands. We're expecting to get a lot of online orders in the next week. The producers say, 'Back up your website. It will probably crash,'" Tillotson and Welsh said.

You'll have to watch the show to find out if the students get the million-dollar partner they're looking for.

Shark Tank airs Friday at 8 p.m.

Ducks Avenge Civil War Loss With 3-2 Win

Courtesy: Oregon Sports Information

EUGENE, Ore. – Jimmie Sherfy earned his 13th save of the season, keeping the game-tying run at second in the top of the ninth as the No. 9 Ducks defeated No. 23 Oregon State 3-2 on Tuesday night at PK Park.

With the win, the Ducks (35-14) even the season series with the Beavers (30-16) as the teams will end the regular season with a three-game Pac-12 series in Corvallis, May 25-27.

Oregon did a little two-out damage in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead as Ryon Healy started the rally with a triple off the wall in center field. He scored from third asBrett Thomas drove his team-leading 12th double down the first base line. The inning continued as Kyle Garlick was walked, and a double steal put both runners in position to score on Ryan Hambright’s two-run single as the Ducks led 3-0 after the first.

After the first inning, the 2,726 fans in attendance watched six consecutive innings of shutout baseball until Oregon State broke through with two runs in the top of the eighth.

The Beavers put two runs on the board as reliever Jordan Spencer gave up back-to-back singles before Sherfy was brought out in relief. A sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, and Danny Hayes’ pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored OSU’s first run of the game. Ryan

Barnes then drove a shallow RBI single into center allowing Jake Rodriguez to score as OSU closed 3-2.

In the ninth, Sherfy issued walks to Ryan Dunn and Kavin Keyes, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but his strikeout of Jake Rodriguez thwarted a Beaver comeback.

Sherfy earned his league-leading 13th save of the season tossing two shutout innings and striking out three.

In the first start of his career, Tommy Thorpe tossed four shutout innings – a new career high - and allowed just one hit while issuing one walk and matching a career best with three strikeouts. He retired the final eight batters he faced.

Joey Housey (3-0) earned the win in relief of Thorpe after tossing two shutout innings on one hit while striking out one. Spencer allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in his one inning of relief.

In the loss, Oregon State starter Taylor Starr (4-2) surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks in two and 2/3 innings of work.

Oregon returns to action at 2 p.m., Saturday to host a three-game series against USC.

Primary Ballots Trickling In

There is one week left to go to make your vote count.

The Primary Election is Tuesday, May 15.

County board of elections offices are busy tabulating mail-in ballots.

Officials are encouraging everyone to get their ballot in the soon the better.

In Benton County, of the roughly 38,000 ballots sent out, so far 11 have been processed.

In Douglas County, the return rate is significantly higher at 22 percent.

And in Lane County, officials have processed more than 18,000 of the 199,000 ballots -- that's a 9-percent return rate.

That number includes ballots through May 4, so they are still counting.

If you still need to turn in your ballot, officials say make sure you sign the outside return ID envelope.

All active registered voters should have received a ballot by now.

If not, contact your county board of elections office.
